HM The Queen names new Intercity Express Train “Queen Elizabeth II” to mark 175th anniversary of the first British monarch to travel by train

Her Majesty The Queen has marked the 175th anniversary of the first rail journey made by a monarch, recreating the original journey made by Queen Victoria, before naming a new Intercity Express Train “Queen Elizabeth II” at Paddington Station today. On 13 June 1842, Queen Victoria made the journey from Slough to Paddington and became the first British monarch to travel by train. The train that day was driven by Daniel Gooch and assisted by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

All aboard The Grecians’ Express

Great Western Railway will be running a special one off train – ‘The Grecians’ Express’, for Exeter City fans travelling to Wembley for the League 2 Play-Off Final on Sunday 28 May. This train is in addition to Great Western Railway’s normal train service from Exeter St Davids to London Paddington and means there will be three direct trains to the capital, which will give fans plenty of time to get to the stadium before the 3pm kick off.

Summer Sunday Plymouth to Gunnislake train starts this Sunday

Great Western Railway (GWR) will be introducing a new, later Sunday train for the Summer on the Plymouth to Gunnislake Tamar Valley Line on Sunday 21 May. The train will leave Plymouth at 2001, arriving at Gunnislake at 2047. The return service will leave Gunnislake at 2050 and arrive at Plymouth at 2135.

Later and more trains for Maritime Line users coming soon

Great Western Railway (GWR) will introduce an improved timetable on the Truro to Falmouth Maritime Line from Sunday 21 May. On Mondays to Fridays, the last train on the line will run more than half an hour later. The train will depart Truro station at 22 44 instead of the current 22 08 and Falmouth Docks at 23 11 instead of the current 22 35.

Great Western Railway (GWR) has recently announced the award of a grant of £49,357 to the charity which operates the forthcoming annual ROC 5K fun run in Truro. The grant, awarded by GWR’s Customer and Communities Improvement Fund (CCIF), will fund two new job coaches who will work with the increasing number of local people with learning disabilities who want a paid job.

The train will have special poignancy as it will be celebrating the life of Bob Smart previous visit Somerset chairman who died on the 12th May 2016 after a short illness.

Penguin Books founder Sir Allen Lane honoured at Exeter St David’s railway station

A memorial plaque commemorating Penguin Books founder Sir Allen Lane has been unveiled today at Exeter St David’s railway station. The orange plaque, commissioned by Sir Allen Lane’s daughter Clare Morpurgo and designed by Penguin Random House, recognises Sir Allen’s contribution to British publishing and commemorates the location where he conceived the iconic sixpenny paperback.

Emergency engineering work at Bath Spa successfully completed

Following emergency engineering work between 1215 and 1330 services through Bath Spa are returning to normal. An all line block was taken by Network Rail at 1215 to repair damaged points near Oldfield Park, which was causing further disruption to an already reduced service during modernisation work to the station.
