The railway station at Weston-Super-Mare is to benefit from improved disability access, following a successful bid by First Great Western and Network Rail for a government grant to enhance facilities.

Chosen as one of only 42 stations nationally, Weston will receive a share of a £100 million fund, which will see lifts installed, enabling disabled passengers to take better advantage of services.

Weston Station Manager Mathew Morgan said:

“We recognise the key role that rail travel has in supporting the local and national economy and we are delighted that this improvement work is to go ahead, improving access to Weston station for all of our customers.

"During the previous franchise over £85 million was invested across our network of 210 stations, by working with industry partners, the DfT and local authorities."
Detailed designs and costing for each station will be drawn up in due course and a timescale put in place to complete the works.
Welcoming the announcement Weston-Super-Mare MP John Penrose said:

“It’s brilliant news that Weston is one of only two stations in the South West to get this funding. We need to give people better alternatives to travelling by car, whether they’re visiting Weston’s wonderful seafront or simply commuting to work, so making it easier and more accessible to go by train is an obvious and important step forward.”

It is anticipated that the station will operate normally throughout any improvement works.

To cater for increased summer demand, the 0900 Sunday service from Paddington, via Bristol Temple Meads is being extended to Weston-Super-Mare, arriving at 11.17.

A return service from Weston-Super-Mare to Paddington will depart at 11.38, calling at Bristol Temple Meads at 12.00.
