UPDATE: Travel Advice for Great Western Railway customers

The derailment of an empty train outside of Paddington on Thursday evening has caused significant disruption to train services today, Friday 17 June, and will continue to impact a small number of services on Saturday 18 June.

Some of the overhead line equipment was damaged and, although Network rail has been able to open four of the six rail lines into and out of Paddington Station, two lines are likely to remain closed for at least the rest of today.

Great Western Railway has put an amended timetable in place on its Thames Valley and South Wales - Bristol - London routes, with just over half the trains on these routes running. This will continue throughout Friday.

GWR services into and out of London Paddington from Devon and Cornwall are largely unaffected, but we would encourage customers to check before travelling on other parts of the GWR network.

GWR expect to be able to operate the majority of services on Saturday 18 June, with the exception of direct Paddington to Cheltenham Spa services and Cheltenham Spa to Paddington. Direct Bedwyn to Paddington services and Paddington to Bedwyn will also be affected, and will terminate at Reading. Passengers can check their journey before travelling at www.gwr.com.

A GWR spokesman said:
"We're sorry for the continued disruption this incident has caused customers, and we are working with Network Rail to get things back to normal as safely and quickly as possible. "Many of our services continue to operate, but some services are likely to be busier than normal and we are asking customers to check before travelling."

Customers caught up in yesterday’s delays are likely to be eligible for compensation, and those who chose not to travel may be able to claim a refund. Full details can be found here
