Great Western electrification announcement

"We're pleased to note that the Transport Secretary called electrification of the Great Western Mainline a top priority, and that Network Rail should concentrate its efforts on getting this crucial upgrade right. Earlier this year we announced our plans for the biggest fleet upgrade in a generation, with new or more modern trains across the whole network delivering faster, more frequent journeys and millions more seats a year - all of this is entirely dependent on Network Rail delivering the electrification programme. The last thing our customers want is for new trains to be consigned to the sidings while this work is completed, and we are glad the Government and Network Rail is being open and honest about the challenges it faces.

"Sir Peter Hendy is one of the most experienced people in the UK rail industry today, and we welcome the news of his appointment as the new Chairman of Network Rail. Despite the challenges outlined today, we are determined to do all we can to help deliver the Great Western Mainline upgrade and are keen to work with Sir Peter and the Department for Transport on Richard Brown's review to help get the scheme back on track with minimum impact on our customers.

"We are ready to do all we can to work with Network Rail to help make this happen, and look forward to continuing engagement with the Government on the future direction of the UK rail industry."
